Samuel Alken

(1756 – 1815)
Partridge Shooting Oil on panel
34 x 46 cm
Acc. No: 1690

Condition: The painting was covered by a thick layer of surface dirt and discoloured varnish, which meant that the original artists colours could no longer be appreciated. There were also a number of dark, open, age cracks that ran down the panel. Finally the painting had an overall drying crack pattern that was visible as the varnish has migrated in the hollows and thus appears darker. The overall condition of the panel was good. An open type of weave canvas had been applied to the back in a number of areas in a previous restoration.

Treatment: Consolidation was carried out in the areas of the open cracks. Following tests, the surface dirt and varnish layer were removed. The back of the panel was cleaned and a brush conservation varnish was applied. The cracks were filled and in painting was carried out in the areas in these areas. A final varnish was applied. The frame was cleaned and the painting was secured using brass plates.
